Located directly across from city hall, the Shannon offers everything one would want from a local watering hole.  Ice cold beer, honest poured drinks, bartenders with character, and a great juke box (featuring a large selection of Irish bands).  Converted from an old movie house, The Shannon is one of the city's oldest running bars.  A little known secret about the Shannon is that they have a huge backroom, perfect for private parties or a venue for bands.

Shannon Lounge owner shares life story

Johanna Wall, the 83-year-old owner of Hoboken’s Shannon Lounge, continues to man the bar seven days a week.

"Cocktails are not my thing," Johanna Wall, the 83-year-old owner and daytime bartender of Hoboken's Shannon Lounge, recently told me. "If they want fancy drinks I tell them to go next door to the candy store."

Wall also has trouble pouring shots. Not, however, because of her endearing obstinacy, but because her eyesight is failing. "I can still pour beers, but when it comes to hard liquor I have to ask my customers for help," she said. "But I trust people. And I'm standing right in front of them, so they can't pour two for one."

Johanna Wall has been tending bar at the Shannon Lounge since 1953, when she and her husband Michael Wall (who passed away 15 years ago) first opened the unadorned watering hole located on First Street across from City Hall. And, if the sassy 83-year-old has anything to say about it, she will continue tending bar for another 10 years.
